Crafted from Merlot grapes harvested from the Pillangó vineyard, this wine welcomes with a mature garnet color and aromas of mint and eucalyptus. It is unmistakably tannin-driven, yet with the refreshing presence of supportive acidity in the background. Dense in structure, it is a serious wine, dominated by fruitiness reminiscent of ripe cherries upon tasting.

It pairs well with characteristic meat, game dishes with tangy – e.g. forest fruit – garnishes, but also with dark chocolate desserts.

2019

The vintage of 2019 featured cooler weather (following a warm spring) and average precipitation. The high annual heat had a positive impact on ripening-taste, scent and aromatic notes are quite concentrated in wines from this vintage. The months around the harvest had low volume of rain, long periods of sunshine and cool nights, enabling us the work with grapes from this vintage that have high levels of acidity.

WINE REGION
Villány Wine Region, Pillangó vineyard. This vineyard selection is from the oldest Merlot plantation of the Pillangó vineyard, representing the finest values of the area. Most of the vineyard is a plateau leading to a
western aspect slope. It is named after its shape resembling a butterfly spreading its wings.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Merlot

VINIFICATION-MATURATION

We have been harvesting fine Merlot grapes from the Pillangó vineyard, planted in 1995. This vintage is particularly special because the vineyard is currently undergoing replantation, making it considered the final commercial vintage for a while.

In order to highlight fruitiness, maturation begins at a low temperature. Fermentation with grape skins took a total of 23 days. Both malolactic fermentation and maturation took place in barrique barrels. Barrels: 225 l; made of Zemplén and Mecsek oak; ages: 60% new, 20% two-year-old, 20% older.

We selected the best barrels in the course of the 16-month maturation, and these were independently bottled under the PILLANGÓ name.

The first impressions on nose and palate are characterized by silky acids arriving through fruitiness reminiscent of ripe cherries, and accompanied by hints stone fruits like almonds. Its ripe tannins are pronounced but restrained at the same time, with a spice profile embodied by cinnamon, dark chocolate and a touch of vanilla.

Recommended for big game dishes or refined roasts e.g. forest berry reduction. It is also worth trying with dark chocolate desserts!

2020

The vintage of 2020 was characterized by an early spring, followed by a warm, relatively dry summer. It did not pose significant challenges in terms of plant protection. The harvest months were marked by limited rainfall, prolonged sunny periods, and cool nights. As a result in 2020 we were able to harvest rich grapes also rich in acids.

WINE REGION

The grapes come from our Mandolas and Gombas vineyards. The Cabernet Franc variety has found its natural home in Villány, so we call its wine Villányi Franc and we profess that it is the epitome of elegance and harmony.

GRAPE VARIETIES: 100% Cabernet Franc

VINIFICATION-MATURATION

We harvested the grapes on October 30. 2020, and hand-selected them on sorting tables. Subsequently, we placed them into steel tanks without crushing. Fermentation and maceration lasted for 25 days, and right after malolactic fermentation we wrecked the wine directly into 225-liter barrels without any pressing. For aging we exclusively used Hungarian oak for 13 months-20%first-fill and 80% second and third-fill barrels.

2015

VINTAGE – 2015 We had some excellent months with a very high number of sunshine hours and cumulative heat, as well as a couple of record-high temperatures. But the grapes were not frightened, and the weather remained dry and warm till mid-October. The harvest of 2015 began on 1 September, we received grapes with good proportions and balance, as well as a fine nutrient content. The wines made have livelier acidity, feel vivid and crispy, with powerful fruity notes.
