Vylyan and Arts - BarrelArt Project
VYLAN AND ARTS
Vylyan always takes the opportunity to support art and grabs all ideas that were born from the encounter of arts and the beautiful wines. We stand up for any genre of art that represents value and gladly help the initiatives of the open-minded, young and talented artists.
A good example for this is Vylyan’s art tender for the label of Bogyólé (our primeur wine kind of beaujolais nouveau). Year by year we give the opportunity to art students in Pécs to design the label and introduce their talent to a wider audience.
Vylyan arranged programmes together with famous Hungarian singers, music bands and wine bards (Sebő Band, András Berecz, Kaláka and the wine bards of Pécs.
They arranged a literary night called “One can live without wine and literature, it’s just not worth it”, with prestigious participants like: Lajos Parti Nagy, Pál Závada, Iván Bächer, András Cserna Szabó and Benedek Darida.
In 2008 Vylyan joined the Ördögkatlan Festival supported by Bárka Theatre (BP).
What is the best thing that can happen to a barrel after years of service in the wine-cellar?
The answer was given by the artists of the Artistic Barrels project.
The Artistic Barrels project is the tangible cross-section of arts and beautiful wines. It was first launched in 2008 through the co-operation of Vylyan Winery and 17 artists from Pécs. We introduced their innovative works in August during the 1st Ördögkatlan (Devil’s Canyon) Festival. The project shall be organised in 2009, too.

The goal is to create works of art at the meeting point of arts and winemanking which emphasize the alternative usage of space and objects, and transcends borders between the various artistic fields.
The new works of art shall be added to the already existing permanent exhibition on 6 August, during the 2nd ÖRDÖGKATLAN /Devil’s Canyon/ Festival.
Barrique barrels were used for the unusual artistic works. The original and innovative artistic works meet the atmosphere of the Siklós-Villány Hills. They highlight on the cultural and creative power of the region. Besides they draw attention to the wines of the region, the unique natural facilities and to the alternative use of space and object.
The barrel-installations are the identical symbols of the wine region. The permanent barrel exhibition can be visited on Fekete-hegy in Kisharsány during the whole year.
In the first year (2008) 17 barrels were made, 17 wonderful individualities. We are planning the barrel-project in the long-run, so year by year the open-air exhibition is now extended by new creations.
APPLICATION 2009►
The „raw material” of the works of art is a 225-litre oak barrel used for ageing wine. This unusual raw material has philosophical, linguistic, visual and material potential too, so there are various ways in which contemporary artistic creations may come about. It offers a chance for experimentation, for the use of installation and other means. For example: stone, metal, iron, frost-resistant ceramics, wood, oil-based paint, etc.
Size: Length is 94 cms, total diameter: 69cms, diameter at the bottom: 56 cms.
The location of the permanent exhibition:
The wine region of Villány, Kisharsány, Fekete-hill, around Vylyan Winery (beautiful panorama, protected natural environment, gently rolling landscape filled with wine, modern wine cellar building, Mediterranean porch)
Further locations: After the vernissage, artistic barrels shall be shown in other locations too, i.e. during festivals, thematic exhibitions.
Professional and technical aspects:
-Resistance to weather, and to ageing (time). Only works of art may be created that are suitable for placement outside, so they must be stable, durable, injury-resistant works that may be circled around.
-Aspect of realisation: costs, material for the work of art should remain in between the borders of reality (should not be too high).
-The format of the barrel must remain visible, the barrel as a symbol of the region.
-The barrels may be moved temporarily, so the mobile nature of the work of art is also an aspect to be remembered.
The application must contain:
- The CV of the artist (at least a few lines)
- A picture depicting the planned work of art, on which the imagined end product is seen
- The concept of the work of art.
Judging of the entries:
The applications shall be adjudged by a jury, with professional and technical aspects in view. Its members are:
- György Várkonyi, art historian,
- Colin Foster, sculptor, Dean of University of Pécs Faculty of Arts,
- and the „host”, Vylyan Winery.
Vylyan Winery is obliged to
