TALKING VINEYARDS

Vylyan MANDOLAS and PILLANGO 2006 have just arrived with the spring and blooming almond trees!

From the very beginning our aim was to make the most beautiful wines possible, trying to express the unique terroir of Villany. We believe that minimum 70% of the quality is coming from the grapes, thus we put special focus on our vineyards and vines.

The secret of winemaking lies in the details, just like the numerous tiny differences of the vineyards (exposure, soil, climatic conditions) have a strong effect on the wines’ character. To express the individual characteristics of each vineyard - that’s the real challenge of Vylyan’s chief winemaker, István Ipacs-Szabó.
Each variety on each vineyard has been always vinified separately to see differences clearly. Time and the exceptional 2006 vintage have born its fruit: we can taste now PILLANGO vineyard Merlot and MANDOLAS vineyard Cabernet Franc.
We decided to make vineyard selected wines only in best years - alike our flagship wine Duennium. The labels reflect the clarity and individuality of the “talking” vineyard names.

 
PILLANGO 2006

PILLANGO comes from our oldest merlot plantation of the Pillango vineyard, presenting the most beautiful values of the terroir.

Pillango vineyard was planted in 1995, it is a plateau, which runs into a western-facing slope. PILLANGO [in English: butterfly] was named after the butterfly shape of the vineyard.
Butterfly is the miracle of nature; it’s the symbol of beauty, transformation and soul. It symbolises metamorphosis, just like how grape turns into wine.

We harvested balanced and fully ripe merlot in 2006. The maceration lasted for 25-30 days on the skin. The malolactic fermentation and maturation took place in the barrels of 225 l, made out of Hungarian oak from Zemplen and Mecsek wood. Age: 80% new, 20% 2 years old.
During 18 months aging we selected the nicest barrels and bottled them as PILLANGO.

The variety Merlot is usually referred to as „she” in our winery, but PILLANGO shows a new face of merlot: strong and definite, like a real amazon.
Its intensity and lively character is coming through its fruity aromas (ripe sour cherry, cranberry, plum and blackberry) complemented with cocoa beans and eucalypt notes. It has a long-lingering finish with oak-derived spiciness.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MANDOLAS 2006


MANDOLAS comes from our Mandolas vineyards’ Cabernet Franc, presenting the most beautiful values of the terroir.

Mandolas vineyard with its southern exposure and cauldron shape conserves heat well, and Cabernet franc simply loves  this terroir.
The name MANDOLAS [in English: almond] refers to the almond trees grown here in the past. Almond tree grows where the noble grapes do. Its flowers symbolise spring, light and new-born life.

The exceptional vintage and terroir meets in this wine. The harvested grape was rich and inky. Maceration lasted for 45 days on the skin. The malolactic fermentation and maturation took place in the barrels of 225 l, made out of Hungarian oak from Zemplen and Mecsek wood. Age: 80% new, 20% 2 years old.
During 19 months aging we selected only the nicest barrels and bottled them as MANDOLAS single vineyard selection.

This wine definitely shows that Cabernet Franc has a mission in Villany wine region!
MANDOLAS is a concentrated, serious wine with finesse, and elegant structure. Still fresh fruit aromas (black-currant) are melting with deep and refined spicy oak notes (coffee, dark chocolate and vanilla), and catches us with its long-lasting finish!
